Life in Bronte Creek

The neighbourhood went up in a single stretch, so the homes, the schools, and the parks all arrived together and were laid out for each other. Both elementary schools sit inside the neighbourhood: Palermo Public School at 2561 Valleyridge Drive, opened in 2010 by the Halton District School Board, and St. Mary Catholic Elementary School at 2175 Colonel William Parkway. High school students go to Garth Webb Secondary School at 2820 West Oak Trails Boulevard or to St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Secondary School. Catchments for any address can be confirmed with the Halton District School Board and the Halton Catholic District School Board.

The park is the reason the neighbourhood feels bigger than it is. Bronte Creek Provincial Park covers about 6.5 square kilometres directly to the south, with five hiking trails, picnic areas, and a campground. Inside the neighbourhood, Valleyridge Park at 2524 Valleyridge Drive has a splash pad and an accessible playground, Colonel William Woods Park has a treehouse style play structure set in the trees with a gazebo and picnic tables, and the Colonel William Pond parkette and trail, named in 2005 for Oakville’s founder, gives the pond streets their walking loop. Fourteen Mile Creek runs along the western and northern edge, and Colonel William Parkway, the spine of the neighbourhood, runs south from Dundas Street West and ends at the reservoir.

The other reason people pick this corner is the 407. The full interchange at Bronte Road sits at the top of the neighbourhood, which puts Mississauga, Burlington, and the airport on one highway with no surface streets to cross first. Highway 403 and the QEW are south on Bronte Road, and so is Bronte GO at 2104 Wyecroft Road on the Lakeshore West line for anyone who works downtown. From there the price moves up or down for the things that set one house apart from its twin: a lot that backs onto the provincial park, a pond, or the creek corridor instead of another backyard; a finished basement, a new kitchen, or a redone backyard; and whether the roof, furnace, and air conditioner have been replaced or are still the ones the builder put in, since every house here is reaching that point at about the same time.
